From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday various indigenous groups celebrate according to their traditions. Although the processions take place in every town, the most colorful are found in the capital and in Antigua Guatemala, 45 kilometers away. Guatemala has the largest indigenous population in Latin America (over half of the 11 million inhabitants), so traditions and customs show a very strong local influence. A blend of Mayan and Christian imagery marches through the streets with the faithful walking on very large and colorful carpets made of died sawdust. Some of these ephemeral rugs are true works of art that in some cases take days to complete. Very few countries in Latin America have held so stubbornly to the Easter colonial traditions as Guatemala. The first of these processions took place on March 10th 1943.
