This festival marks the end of Buddhist Lent and occurs in October or November, the date determined by lunar cycles. For a week or two prior to race day, anticipation builds as many market stalls appear along the banks of the Mekong. On race day teams of rowers race their long, narrow boats down the stall-lined stretch of the Mekong. With many companies fielding teams, the races take all day to complete and are accompanied by a lot of eating, singing, cheering and beer drinking.
